78 TROOPY BUILD

  • Alu-Cab is one of the most popular and durable roof conversions in Australia, especially for Troopy builds. It offers a full roof lift, comfortable sleeping, and integrated accessories.

  • For serious overlanding, All-Terrain (A/T) and Mud-Terrain (M/T) tyres are the most reliable choices for a Troopy. They offer durability, traction, and confidence across Australia’s harshest conditions — from corrugated dirt roads to deep sand and muddy tracks.

We personally run Toyo Open Country M/T tyres and managed over 70,000 km of travel on one set. They’ve proven themselves time and time again, handling rocky trails, river crossings, and highway stretches without issue.

  • Recovery gear is non-negotiable. We always carry Maxtrax, a winch, and full first aid and snake bite kits. These are essential for safety when travelling off-grid.

  • For a Troopy overlanding build, we recommend a Victron-based system with a 2 x 200Ah lithium battery, DC-DC charger, inverter, and solar input. This combination balances reliability, off-grid capability, and ease of use. Our own Troopy uses a full Victron setup installed by Eric at EV Autoelectrical.

  • At least 200–400W of solar panels is ideal for running fridges, lights, and charging devices. Portable solar blankets are great for flexibility, while a fixed roof panel ensures consistent charging.

  • A dual-zone fridge/freezer is essential. We use a National Luna 90L, which allows us to store fresh food and frozen supplies for extended trips without resupply.

  • A 12-volt or diesel hot water system is ideal. In our build, we installed a 10L hot shower system paired with a Webasto diesel heater for hot water and cabin warmth.

  • A diesel heater makes a huge difference. It keeps the cabin warm during cold nights and uses very little fuel, making it perfect for off-grid travel.

  • Yes. With solar, lithium storage, water tanks, fridge/freezer, and recovery gear, a Troopy can keep you self-sufficient for weeks at a time. Our build was designed with full off-grid living in mind.

  • The V8 Troopy offers durability, power, load capacity, and off-road toughness suited for long overland trips, allowing for heavy modifications and reliable performance in remote Australian environments.
